Corey Ackelmire was nice enough to tag me on her blog, so here are my 5 facts:
1. I walked around SOFA Chicago this year in wet pants. Yep, wet pants. As I was pulling into Navy Pier, I spilled coffee on my car seat; right between my legs…it then ran down the seat, soaking into my pants. I was unable to find a private restroom with a hand dryer in which I could dry my pants…so I just let them air dry. Yep, that is hard core.
2. I can’t stand nuts in brownies or on ice cream…or anything that should be just soft, mushy goodness.
3. I don’t like carbonation, so, I basically only drink milk or water (and coffee!). I used to be very self-conscious about how I never drank soda as a kid…I couldn’t stand the stuff because it was fizzy and also sometimes looked a lot like motor oil. So, on several occasions (while trying to avoid being made fun of) I would order soda and pretend to drink it. Looking back, I wish I hadn’t cared so much….:-)
4. I wear something blue pretty much every day.
5. I’m saving my fingernail clippings for a piece I’m hoping to start soon. So, over the past year, I’ve been letting my fingernails grow until I can’t stand it, then I cut them off, bag them, and date them. So, right now, I have quite a few baggies of fingernails lying around!

It has been a busy month of school visits, the GRE, and teaching…so not much art (or blog posting) being done as of late. I had noble intentions of posting about my trip to SOFA Chicago before Thanksgiving break, but a friend of mine got some horrible news about her health and that threw everything out of whack. The whole situation is an all around suckfest.
Back to SOFA Chicago. I went up on Saturday, specifically to catch a couple of lectures I thought sounded interesting. I managed to see Suzanne Ramljak, the editor of Metalsmith, give the presentation about the work in the Exhibition in Print. This was the first time that I’ve ever been sitting in a lecture somewhere and actually seen my work go up on the big screen…when she said my name it was like some strange out of body experience that I am unable to describe. I felt like the lecture and accompanying exhibition were really well done.
I did, however, want to give an award to Sienna Gallery for the best booth display ever made. They have a few images from SOFA on their website. All of the work featured at their booth was phenomenal, and both the color of the booth and the smell of the flowers made it the most inviting area on the entire floor. I was really interested in Sondra Sherman’s work Anthophobia: Fear of Flowers. The display alone was stunning (and I have it on good authority that she is teaching a class at Penland this summer!)
If you peruse the Sienna Gallery website, you will also see some work from Myra Mimlitsch-Gray, who just completed a residency at Kohler. I’ve pretty much decided that she is a genius….and get this, she used to teach at Purdue! No kidding.
On a side note, I just visited the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. They have absolutely AMAZING studio facilities for faculty and grads. They recently renovated an old factory, which houses studio spaces (and common work areas) for both faculty and grads in one building! You can even live right next door….it will make you speechless…so see it if you can.
